The 10 authors on this list, with a gross of about £100 million, represent two fifths of the children's books turnover in the general trade in the UK alone. These incredible amounts do NOT include film rights, merchandising etc.
J.K. Rowling, for example, made FAR MORE from film rights than she did from her 'Harry Potter' books! Here are some facts:-
- This whole UK kid's book market, with the big 10 included, comes up to 29 million books sold and a gross of £168 million
- For all 426 titles selling over 30,000 copies, it rises gradually to 33.6 million books sold and £197.6 million
- The high jinks of Harry Potter and the guru aspect of Philip Pullman have enlivened the media and shown booksellers a good time, and major growth can be predicted for fantasy books and books for older children.
- In 2004, UK consumers spent more than £4 BILLION on books.
